Things to do in Enschede: Sports Activities

Approximately 4.5 million of the 16 million people in the Netherlands are registered to one of the 35,000 sports clubs in the country. Below are the most popular Dutch sports activities.

How can you participate in a sport club/ organization as a Saxion student?


To make use of the facilities of Sport & Culture, it is mandatory to have an Xtra-card. The Xtra-card costs € 65. However, if you order it after October 15, it will cost you € 75 and € 40 for membership of half a year. Payment is only possible via pin and chipknip. The Xtra-card can be ordered by students of the University of Twente and Saxion. An Xtra-card gives access to the facilities of both institutions and other sports organizations and clubs in the Netherlands.

Things to do in Enschede: Entertainment.

Enschede has a relatively large student population: many of the 10,000 University students and the 4,000 University of Twente and ITC students live in this city and meet each other in the bars, discos, etc. in the centre (especially on Thursday and Saturday evenings). Enschede has been nominated many times as the city with the best student facilities (housing, entertainment, sports, etc.).

Restaurants

Enschede has a lot of nice restaurants in the city centre, most are located at and around the Old Market. Most restaurants have a 'daghap', which is one specific meal that is special for that day and usually a bit cheaper. There are all kinds of restaurants with dishes from all over the world. Of course there are also some nice 'restaurants' for a midnight snack.

Bar, pubs and clubs

A lot of the bars and clubs in Enschede are located at the Old Market and the streets around this square. When the weather is good, this is also an excellent location to sit outside of one of the bar terraces. There are a lot of pubs, but there are also some bars with a special dance department. Dutch bars and clubs will close at 4 o'clock in the morning. Soon enough you will find out about the Fellini, Aspen Valley, Rico Latino Salsaclub, Paddy's, Friends, Molly Malone, Het Bolwerk, and many more...

Cinema

In Enschede there are two cinemas: Cinestar (near the FC twente stadium) and Cineast (city centre). The movies will not be dubbed, so are spoken in their original language. They do have Dutch subtitles. If you show your studentcard you can get 1 Euro discount from Tuesday to Friday. You can also buy a 5-movie-ticket, which gives you a little discount. This 5-movie-ticket is however personal, so only you can use it.

Concerts & Performances

There are different places in Enschede you can go to for concerts and other performances. In some cases you can get a student discount with your studentcard or the Xtra-Card.

Pooling

There are different pooling cafes in Enschede. For example The Bridge at the Old Market and the Snooker & Poolcentrum in the Beltstraat, just across from the casino.

Casino

In Enschede there is a Holland Casino. You can find it at the Van Heekplein in the city centre.

Go Planet

Near the Enschede Drienerlo train station and the Grolsch Veste (FC Twente stadium) is the Go Planet area. Here you can find a place for bowling, pooling, kartracing, diving, the ice rink, a concert hall, the Cinestar cinema and quite a few restaurants.
